Sr. Angela Ann is from Erie, Pennsylvania, and first met the Mission Helpers while volunteering at a Summer Vacation Bible School. She was interested in lay missionary work and after high school she read about a program in North Carolina called the Mary Missioners. She was accepted into the program, and, by the end of the year, she applied for entry into the Community with the hope of a ministry in Latin America.
Her first full-time ministry was in the Diocese of Pueblo, Colorado, working with both Hispanic and Native Americans, followed by the Archdiocese of Boston, where she was engaged in Catechetical Formation, teaching deaf children and inner-city parish visitation.
In 1971, she was sent to Dayton, Ohio, to work in Catechetical Formation—an assignment that was to last for one year. But as her ministry expanded, Sr. Angela Ann discovered the value of cable television in faith formation and designed the first Catholic cable TV studio in the country, producing programs distributed to more than 40 counties in Ohio. She received a Gabriel Award for one of her productions and created a weekly Catholic radio program for young adults.
Recognizing her work in telecommunications, in 1979 the University of Dayton (UD) named her Director of the Office of Moral and Religious Education, encouraging her to apply her experience to advance the Catholic mission of the University through communications.
She founded the Center for Religious Telecommunications (UD), collaborating with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and produced many conferences, symposiums, and video teleconferences.
She has served as National, North American and World President of UNDA (World Association for Catholic Communications), and as a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. Sr. Angela Ann was the co-director of the Caribbean School for Catholic Communications for 25 years, which is based in Trinidad, West Indies—finally the ministry in Latin American that she envisioned so long ago.
At the University of Dayton (UD), in 1995 she was appointed Executive Director of the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives and designed the first online Catholic Adult Faith Formation programs in English, Spanish and Arabic, which are now distributed worldwide.
She is also a full-time tenured professor in the Department of Religious Studies, focusing on undergraduate and graduate catechetical and lay leadership formation.
Sr. Angela Ann has served on numerous national and regional Catholic Commissions and received many awards including the Pro Ecclesia Pontifice Medal from Pope John Paul II.
She has co-authored several books, including “Voices of Courage: Profile of Catholic Women in Church Communications.”
She has served as chair of the Mission Helpers Community Days, as advisor to the CSB, and as vice president of the Community.
She holds an MA Degree in Theology from the University of Dayton, and a D. Min. Degree in Theology/Communications from the United Theological Seminary.
