Sr. Nancy is a native of Marianna, Pennsylvania. She joined the Mission Helpers Community in 1956, beginning her ministry in Brockway, Pennsylvania, visiting parishioners in their homes and teaching religion to elementary and secondary CCD students.
She served on the Diocesan staffs in Catechist Formation and parish coordinator in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, before moving to Pittsburgh, where she joined the Diocesan staff as Director of Catechist Formation and Staff Development. She also taught at Duquesne University Graduate School of Education-CCD.
In 1988 she was called to service at the Mission Helper Center in Towson, where she was charged with selling antiques and other furnishings as the Community downsized its physical plant.
In the early 1990s Sr. Nancy began work in the field of mental health in Washington County (Pennsylvania); first as a Psychiatric Aide in Centerville Clinic and then as Service Coordinator in an Early Intervention program. Later, she worked with adults with mental health and drug issues in group homes and began substitute teaching special needs students in public schools; both missions were in Marianna, Pennsylvania.
In 2011 she was called to serve as a Hospice Chaplain in several Pennsylvania counties. “I loved this work,” recalls Sr. Nancy, “and although you face death every day as a hospice chaplain, you get some of the most beautiful spiritual experiences imaginable.”
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Notre Dame University of Maryland, a master’s degree in religious studies from Mundelein College in Chicago, a BA and JCL in Canon Law from the University of Leuven in Belgium, and an equivalent Master’s in Theology from Catholic University.
Sr. Nancy currently lives at Mission Helper Center in Towson, Maryland, assisting in the management of the Center, covering the reception area, and helping to ensure building security. And, once again she is called to help ready the Community to relocate. She is co-chair of the committee charged with clearing out the center. Her colleagues say that “this is where her top-notch sales skills are on display.”
